Bucs Post Game: Who We Thought They Were

In honor of Dennis Green’s first win as the head coach of the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions we’ll borrow his most famous outburst to break down the Buccaneers loss to the Steelers.
“THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE”
The Bucs have played two pretty bad teams in the first two weeks to get off to a 2-0 start. I don’t think anyone was buying them (Ok, I sort of was and now my Facebook profile picture is the Steelers logo for the REST of the season. It was probably a bad bet on my part).
Here’s what we thought they were and what they are. The Bucs are a young team with promise. They have some up-and-coming stars, Josh Freeman, Mike Williams, Quincy Black, Gerald McCoy and Aqib Talib. They’ll look good some games (last week) and terrible others (this week).
Here’s what else we know… they can’t run the ball (Caddy: 6 carries, 13 yards). No pressure in the backfield (Batch sacked exactly 0 times, hit just once and only 4 tackles for a loss). The offensive line that was once a bright spot has become a major liability (just ask Josh Freeman who was running for his life). And we also now know that the loss of Tanard Jackson for the season is really going to hurt.
“WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK”
The Bucs had chances on Sunday.
- An interception to start the game… ends in a field goal
- A long drive… ends in a field goal
- Another drive… ends in a fumble
- A sure interception in the endzone… ends as a TD for the Steelers
That’s the difference right there. When you play a team like the Steelers, you have to capitalize on opportunities. Unfortunately, the Bucs just didn’t.
“IF YOU WANT TO CROWN THEM, THEN CROWN THEIR ASS”
If you want to crown the Steelers… I won’t argue. They’ve beaten three decent teams with a “duck” and a member of “AARP” under center. The defense is just that good (as long as Troy Polamalu is healthy). When Ben Roethlisberger gets back this team is going to be pretty darn hard to beat.
“THAT’S WHY WE TOOK THE DAMN FIELD”
It wasn’t all bad. We once again saw flashes of a growing connection between Josh Freeman and Mike Williams. LeGarrette Blount looked like a bruising, punishing running back and once again Aqib Talib looks like a star DB (even with the bad tip).
You can’t play the Browns and the Panthers every week, but maybe that’s a good thing. The Bucs took one on the chin from arguably the best defense in football. But now they have the bye-week to look back and figure out what worked and what didn’t. Hopefully this loss will be another building block for the team.
