The #5 Oregon Ducks went into Tempe on Saturday and capitalized on 7 Sun Devil Turnovers and grabbed a 42-31 victory. It was Oregon’s first Pac-10 victory and they are now 4-0 on the season. Oregon’s offense wasn’t exactly what it has been for the first 3 games of the season but they got the job done. Oregon’s Defense is what kept them ahead in the game, although giving up 597 yards to the Sun Devils, 7 Turnovers is what helped Oregon win. This is the first time so far this season that the Ducks actually gave up more yards then they gained on offense.
This was Oregon’s second big road test, the first was in Tennessee. Game time Temperature was 100 degrees which was a definite factor throughout the game, with players cramping up it seemed like every other play, most of them being Sun Devil players. Once again Chip Kelly had the Oregon players ready to play in such weather, cranking up the heat in the Moshofsky Center for a couple practices getting them ready for what they would be faced with at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday Night.
Despite Oregon’s offense not putting up numbers we are used to seeing they still had solid numbers for the game. LaMichael James had 28 carries for 114 yards and a TD, the TD coming on a 40 yard breakaway run. Darron Thomas’s line consisted of throwing 19 for 33 for 260 yards, throwing for 2 TD and 1 INT. Thomas also ran 4 times for 18 yards and a TD. The Ducks did score over 40 points for the 4th straight game but only gained 405 yards doing so, which for most teams is a lot of yards but not the ducks.
For the Sun Devils Steven Threet threw for a whopping 387 yards and 3 TD’s but threw 4 picks. There were a lot of times the defense couldn’t stop Threet from moving the ball down the field to Gerell Robinson and Mike Willie who scored on two of the touchdowns thrown by Threet. The Devils running game was pretty solid for most of the game too, led by Deantre Lewis who had only 11 carries for 127 yards and a TD which was a big 53 yard TD.
Arizona State definitely gave Oregon all they could handle on the road, but Oregon came through with a tough victory setting up a big match up next weekend at Autzen against the #16 Stanford Cardinals who took care of Notre Dame this weekend in North Bend. This will be the biggest test so far in this young Pac 10 Season for the Ducks. Facing a young and tough QB in Andrew Luck. Gameday has already announced they will be in Eugene Saturday for this one! So you know Autzen will be rocking once again!
