It wasn’t the Raven’s offense that struggled this Sunday. Nah Son, it was the defense that couldn’t hold water against the Browns running attack. In a flip flop of production and stats, the offense willed the Ravens to victory, 24-17 to move to 2-1 and keeping pace with the Bengals.
If there is one thing that has been a constant for the Ravens it has been their defense, specifically the front 7. With Haloti Ngata and Ray Lewis leading the way, the Ravens had only allowed 3 rushers over 100 since the fall of 2009. That all changed on Sunday. Drop the beat please:
“Excuse me. Let me introduce myself,
My name is Peyton, No not Manning, Peyton Hillis
and I came with the illist..”
Well this Arkansas, 7th round, 227th pick by Denver in 2008 may not have rapped his way onto the scene at the Nest, but he sure did have Terrell Suggs wondering who the hell Hillis was after he broke lose for 144yds and a touchdown. Some might call it a fluke, but something was off about the Raven’s front seven. Let’s add in S Tim Zbikowski’s short bus 15-yard penalty of throwing Hillis to the ground way out of bounds to add to a killing 48-yd play and we have SUSPECT. Tim Z just added to his list of dumb plays – remember him running backwards on a punt return!
On the offensive side of the ball, the Ravens went airborne with the Joe Flacco arming it for 262 yards, 3 touchdowns and NO INT’s. Flacco’s new BWRFF (best wide receiver friend fo’eva’) is Anquan Boldin, who he went to for 3 TD’s. Flacco and Boldin torched DB Eazy-E Eric Wright for each of these TD’s. “Eazy Duz It” had to be playing in Cam Cameron’s ear for the entire game, but Wright had to be saying “Slow down, cuz I hit a dippin’, continue my trippin’.” Boldin just shook Wright and the Browns secondary for his 600th catch. “I Spy” Flacco and Boldin wearing matching necklaces after the game.
While the air attack was tearing up the Browns secondary, the running game was hit with a blow, when Ray Rice dipped to the locker room late in the game and didn’t return. Word on the corner is that Rice sprained his knee and is uncertain for the ride to Heinz Field for their next game.
While it is still early in the season for the Ravens to work out their kinks, it remains to be seen if they can put together a complete game from all sides of the ball. 2 out of 3 resulted in a victory for the Ravens. (K Billy Cundif went penalty kick style in the 4th quarter kicking it 8 and 9 yards deep in the Browns endzone to prevent Josh Cribbs from getting his highlight reel on). But when you only beat a team by a TD when you were favored by double digits, the questions start to creep up. What type of team are the Ravens going to be at Pittsburgh next week, especially with the Steelers pop locking on all cylinders withouth Big Ben Rothlisberger? Putting the pieces together for this Raves puzzle is mind boggling.
On another note, anyone heard from biggon’ Terrence Cody? Saw his picture split on 2 Silk Soy milk cartons at the store (didn’t put him on the regular milk carton because they are supporting his desire to stay healthy). Apparently his knee is 100% but HC Harbaugh is playing it safe…
