Army vs. Temple Preview

When and Where: Noon at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.

Series History: 4-3 in favor of Temple. In 2009 the Owls won 27-13.

Matchup: Army comes into this game as confident as ever. They are 3-1 and have improved each week. The defense has faced some high-powered offenses so far and has held up well. The offense continues to be efficient and showed some of its versatility last week in the win against Duke.

Temple was off to a 3-0 start before falling to Penn State last week. The Owls led the game for a good amount of time before Penn State took the lead late in the third quarter. The Owls defense gave up 439 yards but held Penn State to five field goals and a touchdown.

Temple’s offense relies heavily on its rushing attack, namely Bernard Pierce. Pierce left the game against Penn State with an ankle injury last week. Expect him to play Saturday, but look for some other players to get carries as well to lighten the load on him. Pierce has rushed for 343 yards and five touchdowns so fat in 2010.

Player to Watch: MLB Stephen Anderson. Temple has relied on its rushing attack so far, and with or without Pierce I would expect more of the same. Anderson has shown no ill effects from the knee injury that ended his 2009 season. Anderson will be counted on to keep tabs on Pierce or any other Temple running backs. If he has a good game, the defense should be successful.

Potential X-Factor: SB Raymond Maples. Maples made some explosive plays against Duke last week. Temple comes in with a very physical defense, and Army may need to show that they can make plays on the outside before attacking the middle of the Owls defense. Maples speed could provide some opportunities for big plays.

Also Check Out: Navy vs. Air Force. The other two service academies face off this weekend, and it will be a good chance to evaluate where they stand in relation to the Black Knights.

Prediction: I have been going back and forth on this one: Army has been impressive, but Temple has faced tougher competition. I think Army is still a bit bitter over last year’s game and Temple may have a letdown after playing in Happy Valley last week. I expect a hard-fought game, and a slim Army win.

Army 17, Temple 13
