Rams Begin To Build Foundation

Coming off an impressive 30-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday and first win in the month of September in 4 years, have the St. Louis Rams begun to turn the corner? Obviously, it’s too early to tell, but certainly there are some positive signs only three weeks into this young season. QB Sam Bradford has shown improvement on a week-to-week basis, and while not putting up eye-popping numbers yet, has without question, become a leader on this offense. When RB Steven Jackson went down with an injury in the 2nd quarter, combined with a Redskin field goal on their first drive after halftime to take a 16-14 lead, Ram’s fans had to be looking to the sky and thinking “here we go again”. But not on this day.
Bradford and the Rams offense responded with a 12-play, 74-yard drive to regain the lead for good. Something was different here. This didn’t look like the ”Same ‘ol Rams”. A team that would fold, that wouldn’t make the necessary halftime adjustments, that would simply give up. This new-look Rams team proceeded to go on a 16-0 run to end the game and defensively shut out Donovan McNabb and the Redskin offense in the 4th quarter. Bradford finished the game going 23-37 for 235 yards and led a balanced St. Louis attack even without Jackson, making this win even more noteworthy. While this offense had it’s best performance in who-knows-how-long, the defense, led by middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, has steadily improved over these first three contests.
So what happens next? Does this young team continue to build on a foundation and show improvement on a week-to-week basis? Or do they regress under a mountain of injuries and youthful mistakes that have become the norm over the last several years? With leaders on both sides of the ball in Bradford and Laurinaitis, Rams Nation would like to think the former rather than the latter. This organization hasn’t had any leaders since Warner, Faulk, Bruce and Holt left town years ago. Nevertheless, for the first time in a very long time, there’s hope in St. Louis.
As Rams fans, that’s all we can ask for.
