Lately something every Chargers fan wants to talk about is the front office and GM A.J. Smith. The Chargers front office has a certain way of going about there business like every team in the NFL does. Some of the Chargers fans are unhappy with the way things have been run around here. For me, I believe in every decision A.J. Smith and the management makes. The Chargers go where ever A.J. Smith takes them. It is A.J.’s way or the highway and that is the way the Chargers have chosen to run the franchise. The Spanos family own the team and they trust A.J. Smith to make the decisions. Us fans have to realize the team is ran with the Spanos money and they can do what they want with it. If it were our money, we would spend it how we want. The reason the Chargers have been good since 2003, is because that is when A.J. Smith arrived in San Diego. It’s been said many times but it is true, the NFL is a business. Recently the Chargers did not offer long term contracts to two of their pro bowl players in Jackson and McNeil. They did offer them a fair one year tenure to come back and play one year for around 3 million dollars. McNeil did sign last week for 630,000 dollars to play week 6-17. The reason Jackson did not sign is because he wants to be one of the highest payed receivers in the NFL. Jackson should have known that is not the Chargers way especially after he has gotten two DUI’s. Jackson took bad advice from his agent and is now sitting out for the season in the prime of his career, when he could have been making 3 million dollars and get a huge pay day at the end of the season. The Chargers are not 1-2 because Jackson and McNeil have not played. You can’t think that the Chargers would have pass for 500 yards and won last Sunday if they had their starting left tackle and number one receiver. The Chargers started out 1-3 last year with these two players and they also didn’t make it to a super bowl either why would things be different this year. A.J. Smith wants the players to know that the state of the NFL today is that the talent coming out of college every year is better and better and ALMOST every player is a second round draft pick away from being replaced. Why would the Chargers give a player a five year 60 million dollar deal when they already may have had them for their best years when that player was only making 550,000 dollars a year. If you draft well you can replace your good players with a draft pick that will cost a fraction of the big contract the pro bowler expects. The Chargers and most teams in the NFL have a few players they throw the money at. For most teams it is the QB. The Chargers did this with Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates knowing these players could not be replaced. In the past it was Jamal Williams and another player I would throw into the cannot be replaced mix would be Quentin Jammer. Unfortunately the NFL uses up their players and it is sad, the players throw their bodies out on the field every week and risk their health to try and get the big pay day. It is hard to feel sorry for them though when at 21 years old they are handed millions of dollars, who else has that opportunity. When the fact is most players will play twice as hard to get the payday and then fall off after they get it. For Example, Randy Moss, Albert Haynesworth, and Larry Johnson. Now some teams do throw their money at players, like the Cowboys and Redskins. Who sign every big free agent. It just shows spending money does not win games. The Chargers have won more playoff games since 2003 then the Cowboys and Redskins combined. Sorry for the lengthy blog but it bugs me when I hear people say if we could just spend the money we would win a super bowl.
