Well the good news for Flames fans is that the team is playing well. However lets remember that a 5-0 pre season record doesn’t mean a whole lot as the games don’t count in the standings. So don’t get too high on what we see, though certainly feel encouraged. Here are a couple of highlights I’ve been pleased with.
Tanguay-Iginla-Jokinen – Well early indications are that the experiment is working! Like with anything in the pre season don’t get too excited, but if the apparent chemistry continues into the regular season the Flames will be in far better shape than most predicted.
Ales Kotalik – Say what you will about Ales, and I think everyone has by now. Ales Kotalik is earning a spot on this team. From all reports he has come into camp in great shape, and he has looked good on the ice.
Henrik Karlsson – Many myself included wondered out loud why the Flames dealt for Karlsson with two young goalies in the system that need playing time. So Karlsson has looked solid with reasonable rebound control. It’s too early to say for sure but the Flames players are developing confidence in the young Swede. If that holds true then he could get around 20 starts which is about right in my eyes.
The young D – TJ Brodie and Matt Pelech deserve to be on this team if you base it solely on training camp. I don’t believe for a second that either will make the Calgary Flames as with the eight one way contracts on defense unless a trade is made there is no way that Steve Staios or Cory Sarich would be buried in the minors. In fairness to Cory Sarich he has been up and down but when he plays well he can be a presence. So far it has been too inconsistent and he has been outplayed by the kids.
The next cut day will be interesting and contain controversy!
Have a good one!
