Last Game Before Conference Play Starts

USF (2-1 ) host FAU ( 1-2) Saturday night in Tampa. The Owls will make the 218 mile trip from Boca Raton up to Tampa. South Florida is in their 14th season, while the Owls are in their 10th season. Legendary FAU head coach Howard Schnellenberger was quoted this week saying ” We look forward to this game because we have emulated most everything that South Florida does”. Schnellenberger has been there for all 10 seasons. These two programs have met only twice previously, each time a South Florida victory. The first time in 2002 and the last time these two schools met was back in 2007 and South Florida was ranked #6 going into that game. The Bulls squeaked out a win back in 2007. This is the last tune-up for the Bulls before conference play starts up next week.
This is a match-up that clearly favors the Bulls. Could it be… The running of the Bulls this Saturday? FAU has the worst run defense in Division I-A football, allowing 275.7 yards per game. Ouch! FAU suspended four players ( all defensive players ) which includes starting defensive end Daniel Joseph. South Florida is coming off a game where they ran for 226 yards on 44 attempts ( against a very weak Western Kentucky team ) and they should be able to pile up a lot of yards on the ground this week against FAU. Running lanes should be wide and that should open up the passing game for Q.B. BJ Daniels who might get back some healthy receivers this week. The Owls in a loss at home last week against North Texas gave up 257 yards on 54 attempts. Obviously the Owls will stack the line of scrimmage on Saturday but South Florida is a little fast for FAU and the Bulls should be able to run wild on the Owls.
Quick Observation: Last week the Bulls attempted 11 passes and threw for only 57 yards. For the season the Bulls have only attempted 70 passes. I would like to see South Florida throw the ball around 25 times this Saturday and get this passing game going. The Bulls should be able to run up and down the field on FAU but if South Florida wants to make some noise in the Big East, they must be able to pass the ball. Another thing I would like to see is USF recover a fumble, they haven’t done that yet this season.
Prediction: USF 30 FAU 13
Vegas Line: Bulls favored by 22
