Women’s Basketball Rule Violation

Ypsilanti, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University Compliance Office completed there investigation and have notified the NCAA of their finding on Sept 24, 2010 that the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team has four rule violations.
The violations uncovered involved exceeding limits of practice time, improper coach involvement in voluntary practice and two individule violations reguarding prospective student athletes participating in organized workouts.
Eastern Michigan University Athletic Director Derrick Gragg announced the following disciplinary action as a resulut of the rule violations:
Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team head coach AnnMarie Gilbert has been suspended without pay fo 30 days and will have her salary freeze for one year. She is to attend a manditory counseling for 30 days and there will be a Letter of Reprimand placed in her employee folder.
Gilbert is also to face her team after the suspension and apologize for her behavior and she is to attend one of two NCAA Regional Rule Seminar- pay own cost and provide a full summary of all rule sessions attended to Compliance Office.
Eagles assistiant basketball coach Darin Thrun also will have a Letter of Reprimand place in his employee folder plus he will be indefinite suspended with pay and will not be able to recieve a pay increase for the year.
He is also required to attned a Regional Rule Seminare and submit a report to the Compliance Office.
Assistiant coach LaTonya Tate will also face disciplinary action, she will have a Letter of Reprimand placed in her employee file and her salary will will be frozen for the year.
Tate will also have to attende a Regional Rule Seminar and pay the expense out of her own pocket and she is also required to submit a report to the Compliance Office.
Megan Snow the women’s team assistaint athletic trainer will also have a Letter of Reprimand placed in her file for the failure to report suspected rule violations reguarding time limitations and she is to sign off women’s basketball Countable Athletically Related Activities logs for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The assistiant coach strength and conditioning Blair Wagner is required to attend educational sessions with supervisor reguarding voluntary worlouts.
“We obviously take this matter very seriously and are cooperating with the NCAA and have provided a fprmal self report and self imposed sanctions,” Gragg said. “While I am dissapointed, I am confident that coach Gilbert will learn from this and will make her a better coach.”
The following self-imposed sanctions:
A reduction on countable athletically related activities:
Student-athletes will receive two days off weekly during the Mid-American Conference season for 2010-2011.
A reduction in the number of expense-paid recruting trips
No open gym or recreational activities for prospects for two years.
Educational seesions for all of the women’s staff including strength and conditiong coach and the athletic director will be in attendence.
Detail practice schedule will be provided and submitted to the Compliance Office and a repersentive from the Compliance will conduct inspections of practices.
” The issuance of self-imposed sanctiondoes not preclude further disciplinary action,” Gragg said at the conclusion of the press conference.
