Souray, Gerber, clear waivers

The Sheldon Souray saga took another turn today at noon, as the disgruntled veteran Oilers’ D-man cleared waivers.

Goaltender Martin Gerber, the number-four goalie attending Edmonton’s training camp, was also put on the wire by the club yesterday, and has since cleared waivers.

The other 29 NHL teams failed to bite on submitting a claim for either player. Oilers GM Steve Tambellini now has the option of giving the pair a one-way ticket to the team’s AHL franchise in Oklahoma City.

Another option could see the Edmonton GM put the pair on re-entry waivers, allowing other teams to claim one or both at half the salary, meaning the Oilers would be on the hook for the rest. In Souray’s case, that inflated $5.4M per contact could cost the club $2.7M x 2 years. Gerber, on the other hand, who signed for $500K, would be a bargain for a team looking for a backup. Gerber had a solid camp, even winning a game in the shootout Wednesday vs. Phoenix.

A healthy and rejuvenated Souray could have beefed up Edmonton’s blueline, but alas, there’s a new sheriff in town in Tambellini, who is determined to regain the reigns of this floundering team and restore the pride and positive attitude of this once-proud franchise.

So long Sheldon!

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up…sticks down!
