Lose two games in a row, the last one being a disaster of epic proportions and people will start questioning how good you are. The questions were in full effect last night as the 9-3 Calgary Stampeders hosted the 9-3 Montreal Alouettes in a possible Grey Cup preview.
The Calgary Stampeders responded to all the questions by thumping the defending Grey Cup champions 46-21 in front of 31,167 home fans. Needless to say the questions will quiet down about the Stamps now. Henry Burris especially put aside all the off season birthday party questions (Coach Hufnagel was right the bra was too big for Henry) by lighting up the Als to the tune of 19/28 412 yards and 4 TD’s. Smiling Hank also added another 56 yards rushing.
Ken-Yon Rambo and Rombe Bryant both had monster games for Calgary. Rambo had 6 catches for 169 yards and a score highlighted by a 100 yard TD on a short crossing pattern that Ken-Yon broke for the long score. Bryant had 5 grabs for 146 yards and 2 TD’s highlighted by a 61 yard TD early in the game to set the tone for Calgary. Honorable mention to Nik Lewis on his 36 yard TD catch in which he stuck his head down and blew up the Alouettes Mark Estelle on his way to the endzone. Youtube it. Seriously!
Rob Maver made all his kicks which is a good sign as he continues through his up and down year. And the no name defense did an excellent job of keeping Anthony Calvillo and the Alouettes offense under control all game.
If the BC Lions don’t win this week then the Stampeders will have clinched a home playoff game but the focus is keeping ahead of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the bye and hosting the West Final.
Calgary now heads to Montreal on October 11 for the rematch. I would expect the Alouettes to come out firing in front of their home fans. So tighten up your chin straps boys!
Have a good one!
