USF Cruises At Home

USF (3-1) cruised to an easy victory over FAU ( 1-3) 31-3 tonight in Tampa. After last weeks subpar victory over a less than stellar Western Kentucky team, the Bulls rebounded in a big way tonight. South Florida looked sharp on both sides of the ball. The offense had a balanced attack and even special teams got into the act as they scored on a blocked punt and recovered it in the end zone for the second touchdown of the game. The “D” was the story tonight ( only three sacks in the first three games ) but they matched a school record in QB sacks with seven tonight. ( also against FAU ) The Owls quarterback Jeff Van Camp was harassed all night long by the Bulls pass rush, Van Camp eventually had to leave the game. All four starting defensive linemen for South Florida had a sack. Not only did the Bulls record seven sacks, they also got interceptions from junior safety Jerrell Young and sophmore linebacker Michael Lanaris. The Bulls “D” became the last team in Div. I-A to recover a fumble. The Owls only points came right before the half, when FAU went 80 yards but settled for a field goal. Through the first three quarters, South Florida didn’t allow a play longer than 15 yards. South Florida’s defense was stifling!
After the Bulls pathetic showing in the passing game last week, quarterback B.J. Daniels looked much better tonight. Daniels was helped tonight with the return of Dontavia Bogan ( 5 catches 67 yards ) who scored on a 38 yard touchdown off a flea flicker in the third quarter. Daniels looked more comfortable in the pocket and it showed in the passing game. ( 14 for 19 with 153 yards 1 TD pass ) The running attack was solid yet again, but let’s be honest here the Bulls were going against the worst run defense in the nation. The Bulls were lead by Senior running back Mo Plancher who had another solid game with 90 yards on 20 attempts and also scored two touchdowns. Overall South Florida ran the ball 38 times for 142 yards. These last two games for the Bulls were glorified scrimmages. Now the real season begins because conference play starts next Saturday when Syracuse visits Tampa for a noon kickoff.
