Iowa Hawkeyes Defense Leads Team to 24-3 Win Over Penn State Nittany Lions

In its Big Ten conference opener, the No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes beat the No. 22 Penn State Nittany Lions 24-3 on Saturday evening at Kinnick Stadium. In a crowd alternating between black and gold sections that depicted stripes, the Hawkeyes’ score represented its largest win over the Nittany Lions since its 19-0 win in 1930 along with its continued dominance against the team: their eighth win in nine of their last meetings.
With an anemic offense in the second half, Iowa’s senior quarterback Ricky Stanzi still managed to take home 227 yards, a touchdown and a one-yard scoring run. The offensive line seemed to give Stanzi greater protection and more time to throw than previous games; however, he still managed one interception.
Watching him on the field, he looked a little off all evening.
Iowa’s junior wide receiver Marvin McNutt had a good night with four receptions for 73 yards in the first half and five receptions in the second half for 20 yards, leading Iowa’s receivers for the day with 93 yards.
In his first visit to Iowa City as Penn State’s freshman quarterback, Robert Bolden passed for 212 yards. After more struggles in the red zone, the team’s sole score of the evening came from Penn State kicker Collin Wagner’s 25-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter.
Iowa’s sophomore running Adam Robinson gave a great effort in the game, rushing for 95 yards. Many believed he was back in form after last week’s game but Penn State’s running back Evan Royster only had 56 rushing yards in the game.
And yes, I do believe Iowa’s defense had something to do with the low number.
Iowa’s defense was the star of Saturday night’s game. The team held the Nittany Lions to 316 total yards. Late in the fourth quarter with 1:27 left, Iowa’s senior cornerback Shaun Prater returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown, giving the team its only score in the second half.
With his mom in the house, senior defensive end Adrian Claborn was on fire Saturday night, recording a game-high 10 tackles. Adding another true freshman to the mix proved successful for Iowa last evening with linebacker James Morris having seven tackles and one pass break-up.
Throughout the entire game, the defense looked extremely cohesive on the field and unstoppable. In its four home games this season, Iowa’s defense had held opponents to just 17 points and three points in the past two weeks.
Next up for the Iowa Hawkeyes is a road game against the Michigan Wolverines on October 16 at 2:35 central time on ABC. I look forward to seeing Iowa’s defense stop Michigan’s quarterback, Denard Robinson.
I hope he’s ready for a reality check!
