Chargers over Cardinals

It was a very pretty sight for Charger fans on Sunday, as the Cardinals took a whooping from the bolts. The Chargers defense made Derek Anderson and the Cardinals offense look like a high school team. The bolts had 9 sacks, 2 INT’s, and a fumble recovery. Shaun Phillips put together a whole seasons worth of stats in one game with 4 sacks, an INT, and a touchdown. The four sacks was the most by a Charger player since Leslie O’Neal in 1993 against Seattle. The defense has been so good this season and they really turn it up at home getting after the QB and causing turnovers. The special teams played a lot better this week but the they will have to keep working on it and get back to the best special teams unit in the league. I’m sure the whole stadium cheered and let out a big breath when the first kickoff was returned for just 16 yards by the Cardinals Stephens-Howling. The Chargers offense did not put up the huge yardage as they did last week, putting up 419 total yards to last weeks 518. It was 100 less yards but it shows big plays and touchdowns win football games not total yards. Rivers had another great game and made the pass when he needed to. The Cardinals linebackers were chasing Gates around all game and could not stop the all pro TE. Rivers only threw for 241 yards this week as the Chargers ran for nearly 200 yards and had a big lead most of the game. The Chargers QB has 1,328 yards passing on the season and 9 TD’s with a QB rating of 102.8. Rivers is averaging 332 yards passing per game and is on pace for 5,312 yards on the season and 36 TD’s. Now obviously he could drop off, but needless to say if he keeps it up he will be among the top in the league in all these categories.
The Chargers gave the ball to Mike Tolbert a lot and he looked good running for 100 yards. Mathews had 55 yards coming back from his injury. Both running backs have looked good this season when given the chance. If they can hold onto the ball they will be a nice one-two punch. I look at Mathews as the starter and the every down back with Tolbert getting 5-7 carries a game mostly late in the game. The Chargers are still a passing team but the running game sure will help this year as it is a big improvement from last year.
Side note- LaDainian Tomlinson has looked rejuvenated in New York with speed and quickness. It is unfortunate L.T. could not do this for the Chargers last year. I am happy for L.T. though as he will always be a Charger great! L.T. went into seventh place all time (12,831) for rushing Sunday, passing Tony Dorsett.
