Oilers cut eight from roster

He may not like it, but Linus Omark will begin his NHL professional career playing for the Oklahoma City Barons, the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate.

There was much speculation last season, that Omark had refused to come to the Oilers’ training camp until he was promised a one-way deal with the Oil. This season, the talented, young Swede, did agree to a two-way deal with the NHL club, believing he had a great shot to make the club.

And while Omark did dazzle at times, both offensively and defensively during his preseason cup of coffee with the big club, it appears it simply came down to a numbers game, with Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini, as of yet, failing to pull the trigger on a trade – possibly Andrew Cogliano, Zach Stortini etc. – yes, Stortini.

Centre Chris Vande Velde  will join Omark in OK City, while six players were also put on waivers for the purpose of assignment including:

Shawn Belle [1] (D)
Alexandre Giroux [2] (LW)
Ryan O’Marra (C)
Ben Ondrus [3] (RW)
Richard Petiot [4] (D)
Liam Reddox [5] (RW)

The Oilers’ loss, however, will be the OK City Barons’ gain, which should help to ensure a strong first-year showing for the club’s farm team.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up…sticks down!
