Pittsburgh Pirates season recap

The Skinny:  The Pirates finished the season 57-105, their most losses during the 162-game era, one more than the 1985 edition.   The most losses by a Pirates team was 112 in 1954. …

The 105 losses is the most in the major leagues since the Arizona Diamondbacks lost 111 games in 2004.  The Detroit Tigers dropped 119 games in 2003, the most in this decade.  …

Pittsburgh finished with a 17-64 road record, matching the 1963 New York Mets for the fewest road wins since the schedule expanded to 162 games in 1962.   Only eight teams in major league history had a worse road winning percentage than Pittsburgh’s .210.

All the losses cost manager John Russell his job

The Good: The attempts by OF Jose Tabata and 2B Neil Walker to be the Bucs’ first

Neil Walker had a great season

rookie duo to bat .300 since 1899 fell short.   Tabata batted .299 and Walker .296. …

3B Pedro Alvarez had a strong finish.   He had an 11-game hitting streak

stopped Saturday in which he went 21-for-45 with five homers and 21 RBI.  After All-Star break, Alvarez hit .270 with an .830 OPS in 71 games with 16 doubles, 13 homers and 53 RBI.   Walker hit .306 with nine homers and 54 RBI after the break.  Both hitters ranked in the top 10 in the majors in RBI after the All-Star break. …

With two strikeouts on Saturday against Florida, RHP Joel Hanrahan became the fourth Pirates reliever all-time to reach the century mark.  Hanrahan joins Goose Gossage (151 in 1977), Don Robinson (101 in 1984) and Enrique Romo (106 in 1979).

Joel Hanrahan had a great strikeout season

Hanrahan also closed the season as the Bucs’ all-time leader in SO/9 IP among relievers with 50 IP with 12.92.  The 100 strikeouts and 12.92 SO/9 IP both ranked fourth among major league relievers this season.

Here are Pirates’ leaders in SO/9 IP  using the Baseball-reference.com data base. …

The Bad:  You could say Pittsburgh won the triple crown.  The Bucs were last in ERA (5.00), fielding (.979) and batting – take your pick … runs (587), batting (.242) and OBP (.305). The Bumbling Bucs also ranked last throwing out attempted basestealers (22 percent).

The pitching staff ranked last in average against (.282), OPS (.798) and hits (1567).  …

Pirates starters also made history.  RHPs Jeff Karstens, Ross Ohlendorf and Charlie Morton became the first trio in the modern era to start at least 15 games each and win three games or fewer.

Baseball-reference.com list of teams since 1901 who had pitchers with 15 or more starts and three wins or fewer

Pittsburgh also did not have a 10-game winner this season, joining the Arizona Diamondbacks as the only clubs this season.  Thirteen clubs, including the 2008 Pirates, did not post a 10-game winners since 2000.

As a lifelong fan of the first professional team to , losses Phillies I sympathize with Pirates fans. Losing 1 years straight may be pretty bad but doing it so abyssmally as the Pirates is more shame than the good people of Pittsburgh deserve. This was a once-proud franchise and ownership should be ashamed of their performance. PNC Park is arguably one of the most beautiful venues in baseball but when your product on the field is THIS BAD, no one is going to see it! So the question is, how does the team improve in the current market? Nowhere to go but up except that management has not gone “up” in 18 years. No one has been this bad for this long! Since 1992 the Florida Marlins have won 2 World Series, the Rays have made a World Series appearance, Arizona won in 2001 and the Colorado Rockies appeared in 2007. All four of the expansion teams from 1994 and 1998!!!

      I hear you Chris.

You would think the Pirates would find an acorn every now and again, but it hasn’t happened. An the teams you mention are good examples of low-budget clubs who’ve managed to put contending teams in place. While it’s harder in Pittsburgh because of the market, those clubs have shown it can be done.

It looks like the Pirates and Royals will be battling to see who can turn it around quickest.

I think Pittsburgh has a chance with their young hitters and Hanrahan and Meek, but I just don’t see any starting pitching in the pipeline for several years – if then.

      Thanks for reading.

Hopefully the Pirates can turn it around someday. I’m old enough to remember the 1979 “Family”. I’ve been to PNC twice and can’t wait for a third trip. In my opinion, it’s Pittsburgh & Cleveland with the best stadiums in each league.

Having said all that, the Pirates turned a profit this year. What incentive does ownership have to put out a winner? Why should they spend more money on the field? I don’t know who owns the team and what other businesses they own. It makes sense the better the team, the better the merchandise sales are but profiting $15M for a 57-105 sounds like the ownership of a team that only cares about the bottom line.

I mentioned travelling to Pittsburgh twice for Pirates games. Sad but I’m not sure what to do for my next trip. Do I support an owner that, from my perspective, doesn’t care? Or do I say why make myself miss out? I can get great seats for face value anytime I want to make the trip? I’m a Boston guy and a trip to Pittsburgh is probably cheaper that a trip to Fenway. LOL

I’m looking forward to your hotstove stuff this winter.

    Jim

well I love PNC park out of all the new parks out there, it is too bad the Pirates cannot get back to playing better ball like the olden days mentioned. They used to be so strong and now are at best I won’t even say it but minor league. To lose over 100 games, certainly something is wrong but I guess if you don’t have the money, you just don’t have the money…..good luck next year…..FYI-did you see I believe Sanchez with the wrong jersey on in the finale yesterday, PIRATAS, he had on the spanish jersey for the 1st few innings until he was told to change it to what the rest of the team was wearing……hey, at least they have an awesome ballpark and good neighbouhood to play in. I have been to PNC 4 times and loved every visit….

Oh my God, do better! If you can make money when the team loses 105 games then you can make money if you are a winner. Why do I have to tell everyone how to be successful? This team is storied and yet has had nothing for years. It is an insult to all the Pittsburgh Pirates teams of the past and I’m not even a fan! Freaking do better!!! Invest in your talent and build a winner
