It’s Monday morning and Les Miles still has a job. After Saturday’s mind altering conclusion, firing a 5-0 coach didn’t seem like that crazy of an idea. It’s hard for me to sympathize with LSU fans right now because well I’m a Tennessee fan. I had to watch my team almost pull off a miracle and then throw it all away because apparently some of the guys on the team have a communication problem. What happened at the end of the game on Saturday was embarrassing and inexcusable
If I could sum of Tennessee’s season so far it would be ‘head games’. Every game they’ve lost this season (which is more then I care to remind you) has come down to the Vols losing themselves in the second half. I’m not gonna invent excuses for this team by saying that they beat themselves because I think that’s just something people say when good teams playing badly. The problem is they allow other teams to beat them so easily. They would be better off saving us all some time and pain by staying in the locker room after the first half.
Now every team in the SEC is going to know the only thing they need to do to beat the Vols is to figure out a way to get inside their heads. In any other circumstance a team sending out too many players on the field seems almost impossible. This isn’t hockey where the ‘too many men on the ice’ is a frequent (almost too frequent) penalty. This is football and allowing too many players on the field at any given time just feels laughable.
Tennessee is a young team. Most of the players were participating in the first road trip as a Volunteer. Does that excuse their lackluster play? No. However it might help in explaining how LSU could so easily run over Tennessee in all aspects of the game. Stevan Ridley literally ran over them by averaging 5.6 yards per carry.
Matt Simms has to be cursing the day he choose to play in Tennessee. His body is going to look like Violet Beauregarde after chewing the special bubble gum by the end of the season.
Next week this team is going to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Another team that has been struggling to be even just OK this season. I think if we learned anything from Saturday it’s that anything truly is possible.
