Rays Thoughts

The 2008 AL Champs are back in the postseason after a one year hiatus.  When you look at the 08 team and this year’s team, not much has changed except for one glaring thing; David Price has arrived.  So far, it seems like the AL Cy Young will go to either CC Sabathia or Felix Hernandez.  It looks like Price will finish third.  I could make the argument that Price should win it.  He’s in between Sabathia and Hernandez in wins and ERA.  He has 19 wins to go along with a 2.72 ERA.

(David Price)

If you remember, Price made an impact as a reliever in 2008, especially in the ALCS.  We’ll find out shortly if he’s ready to be the ace on the playoff stage.  Can the Rays repeat 2008?  We’ll soon find out.

Rangers Thoughts

There is currently one MLB franchise that has yet to win a playoff series.  That one team is surprisingly the Texas Rangers.  They’ve appeared in the postseason on three occasions (1996,1997, and 1999).  In all three instances, Texas bowed out to the Yankees in the Divisional Series.

Before Nolan Ryan came around, this franchise was all about offense.  Heck it still is, but the pitching has improved drastically.  They went out and got Cliff Lee before the trade deadline, and C.J. Wilson has emerged after spending last season in the bullpen.  Oh, and the hitting is still there; Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, Ian Kinsler, Vladimir Guerrero and Michael Young are a few guys that can go yard.  Then there’s the speed of Elvis Andrus, and Julio Burbon.  The lineup has it all.

(Josh Hamilton)

3 Ways the Rays win the Series…..

  1. James Shields-  They call him “Big Game” Shields.  He’ll start game 2, but he was horrible this year.
  2. Speed-  The Rays have a lot of speed in their lineup with guys like B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford.  They need to get on base.
  3. Evan Longoria-  He was terrific in 2008, can he duplicate.

3 Ways the Rangers win the Series…..

  1. Cliff Lee-  We saw what he did last season, (5 starts, 4-0 1.56 ERA) can he do it in October again.
  2. The health of Josh Hamilton-  He’s by far the best hitter in the lineup.  He needs to step up.
  3. The starters behind Cliff Lee-  Can C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis step up.

I think this will be a high scoring series, except when Lee and Price start.  I like the Rays speed over the Rangers power.
