Arizona vs. Oregon State Preview

Posted By Henry Childs On Oct 6 2010 @ 7:00 pm In Arizona | 3 Comments

Coming off a bye week, the Arizona Wildcats host an Oregon State team that has shown a lot of inconsistency thus far this season. But with a win, Arizona can move to 5-0, 2-0 in the Pac-10, and put themselves in a very good position to make a statement to the rest of the conference.

There are many “keys” to the game, if you will, but none other than Nick Foles’ ability to succeed against the Oregon State secondary will be more important. The Beavers defense, which got pounded by Boise State and TCU, and also got embarrassed by Louisville, played a lot better at home against Arizona State last week. Sun Devils quarterback Steven Threet, who averaged over 300 yards passing coming into the game versus OSU, had slightly above 200 yards against the Beavers. Foles will have to have success throwing the football, because Oregon State has big man Stephen Paea in the middle to stuff the running game.

There’s no denying that the Arizona defense played great against California, almost two weeks ago. But the Oregon State offense is still clouded in mystery. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Katz hasn’t thrown an interception, and he played outstanding against the Sun Devils. But his completion percentage hasn’t been very good. Jacquizz Rodgers has had a couple of good games, but he didn’t play all that well in the big games.

The Arizona defense, led by Trevin Wade, Justin Washington, Jake Fischer, and numerous others, will have its hands full. OSU receiver James Rodgers is still questionable, but it looks like he may play.

In all honesty, I think Oregon State is going to win this game. The Beavers have already played two monstrous games against top-5 teams on the road, and put up a good fight in both games. Now is the time that Oregon State usually starts to play really good football, and despite the Wildcats being at home, I think the Beavers defense is a lot more confident after last weeks’ performance against ASU. Nick Foles has still been inconsistent so far this year, and coming off a bye week, I think Arizona comes out flat, eventually puts up a fight, but ultimately goes down 27-21.
