Take No Bull: SU-USF Preview

Posted By Beth Ann Clyde On Oct 6 2010 @ 11:58 pm In Syracuse | No Comments

The title of this blog entry is paying homage to the homecoming t-shirt SU gave out my freshman year. The shirts said “The Orange takes No Bull from South Florida.” Let’s just say the high light of the game was two fans getting ejected for holding up signs making fun of Chancellor Nancy Cantor. Okay, I’ll also remind you that Syracuse lost 27-0. 2005 was the first meeting between SU and USF. Syracuse is 0-5 against the Bulls.

Syracuse fans would like to think things have turned around, especially as of late. The Orange enters its first Big East game with a 3-1 record. Of course, two of those three wins were against subdivision schools (Maine and Colgate) and the other came against Akron. Still, they were wins—something the Orange has not done much of since 2005 and will look to continue to do in conference

These signs are way better than those "Sports Center is Next" ones people always make to get on TV.

USF Football Fast Facts:
Skip Hotlz
Key Players

B.J, Daniels
, So., QB: 140 passing ypg, 46.8 rushing ypg
Demetris Murray, So., RB: 77.3 rushing ypg
Dontavia Bogan
, Sr., WR: 54.7 receiving ypg
Sam Barrington
, So., LB: 5.8 TPG

Keys to the Game
Keep Daniels in the Pocket

Like Washington’s Jake Locker and Greg Sullivan of Colgate, Daniels likes to run the football. The QB is averaging 46.8 rushing yards per game and has two rushing touchdowns. Daniels is also a gunslinger, though, so the Orange D will have to step up its pass coverage, which has been troubling in its first four contests.

Get the Running Game Going
The Bulls defense could cause big problems for Ryan Nassib. USF recorded seven sacks last weekend against Florida Atlantic, so Syracuse will need to look to get its running game going like it did against Colgate. Look for Delone Carter to spearhead that. The senior QB racked up 172 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns against Colgate.

Make Tackles
Although Derrell Smith and Phillip Thomas are averaging 9.75 and 8 tackles per game respectively, the Orange has had issues tackling. Against Colgate, there were plays in which several Syracuse players were near the Red Raiders’ ball carrier but were unable to make a tackle. The defensive line will need to show improvement this week, especially against a good running team in South Florida.

27 USF: 21

That’s no bull! Syracuse finally beats USF and gives the fans something to cheer about that does not involve security ejecting fans.
