Giants Thoughts

In 1993, San Francisco won 103 games but missed the postseason.  They finished a game behind the Atlanta Braves who won 104 games to win the NL West.  1993 turned out to be the final year of its kind.  The 1994 season was the lock out year and 1995 became the first year of the Wildcard.
The Giants pitching staff dominated in September having one of the best September pitching performances ever.  They were 5th all-time since the live ball era with a 1.78 team ERA in September.  Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez are filthy at the top of that rotation.

(Tim Lincecum)

Braves Thoughts

It’s Bobby Cox last stand  in Atlanta.  In his final season, Cox guided the Braves to their first NL Wild Card win in team history.   You don’t think his players will be motivated to send him out in style.  He is the epitome of a players manager.
Atlanta is a wild-card literally and figuratively in this postseason.  Everyone seems to be counting them out.  Yes, they did struggle in September, but they have solid pitching and a solid bullpen anchored by closer Billy Wagner.  They know how to win close games, and the games in this series will be close and low scoring.

(Jason Heyward)

3 Ways the Giants win the Series…..

  1. Scoring runs for the Giants can be tough.  Pat Burrell, and Jose Guillen are guys acquired midseason that need to step up in the lineup and hit the ball out of the ballpark.
  2. Lincecum had a strong finish to the year, but he’s nowhere near were he was the last two years where he won back-to-back Cy Young Awards.  He’s key.
  3. Buster Posey is the best hitter in the lineup, but he’s just a rookie.  The Panda has had a down year, but has been good of late.

3 Ways the Braves win the Series…..

  1. Getting the top of the order on base is a staple of the Braves this year.  Infante, Heyward and Prado always got on, but Prado will miss the postseason.  Infante and Heyward struggled a bit in September.
  2. Derek Lowe continues his dominance- He was 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA in September.
  3. Tim Hudson-  He had a fantastic year, but tailed off a bit down the stretch.

Jason Heyward vs Buster Posey

PREDICTION- Giants in 4

The games will be tight and low scoring.  I’d be surprised if there was a blowout in this series.  The Giants have the better pitching, therefore putting them into the NLCS.
