Cardinal Poised to Bounce Back vs. Southern Cal

Last Saturday, at around 6:00 pm PST, Cardinal fan was feelin’ pretty good about themselves and their football team. Unfortunately, from 6:01 until 8:30 was pretty much a nightmare. The Stanford Cardinal is looking to bounce back from a 52-31 drubbing at the hands of the Oregon Ducks, face the once high and mighty Trojans from SC.
The PAC-10 championship is still within their grasp, but they cannot have another slip within the conference. Stanford, needs to win out. No more blemishes. All of Stanford’s tough games, on paper, will all be at home, starting with SC this Saturday.
For Stanford to regain a little swagger, having SC come into town just may be what the doctor ordered. This Trojan team has yet to find its identity. Early in the season, it appeared they were looking to bolster Matt Barkley’s resume and add his name into Heisman contention. Much more recently, the Trojans have been focusing more on the ground game. In fact, they are 15th in the country rush yardage.
A year ago, the Cardinal whacked the Trojans 55-21. The game was punctuated by Jim Harbaugh calling for 2 point conversion on Stanford’s final touchdown. After the game, Harbaugh was asked by then SC head coach Pete Carroll, “What’s your deal?” Harbaugh’s response, “What’s your deal?”
Stanford kicked the crap out of the Trojans up and down the field. The Trojans had no answer to the Stanford ground game which racked up 325 yards. I do not believe they will reach over 300 yards on the ground, but Andrew Luck will improve on his 144 yard, 2 TD performance versus the Trojans last year.
The Trojans are coming off a tough last-second loss to Washington, losing on a field goal as time expired. The Trojan defense appears to have made progress since the beginning of the season, but the Trojans D is facing its toughest challenge thus far. The Trojans also seemed to have corrected penalty issues the team was experiencing at the start of the season.
I don’t see any reason to pick against the Cardinal this week. I think SC has a fragile psyche. I am not convinced that they are mentally tough enough to bounce back from the devastating loss versus UDUB and march into Palo Alto and beat Cardinal at their own game.
I see Stanford winning this game rather handily, 41-21.
