Nebraska looks for Big 12 supremacy in conference opener

No. 7 Nebraska is coming off a bye week as it starts Big 12 conference play. It travels to Manhattan to take on undefeated Kansas St. Nebraska is coming off a win that left many fans a bit disappointed. Try to remember that game against South Dakota St. The Cornhuskers won 17-3, but the only thing that got them through that game was raw talent. Kansas St. barely beat Central Florida at home (17-13). The Wildcats are ranked just barely out of the Associated Press Top 25. If Nebraska can win here, it will be interesting to see where it is ranked in the first BCS standings this Sunday.

The key for Nebraska will be on defense, a phase where it has excelled all year long. Kansas senior back Daniel Thomas will need to be contained in order to give Nebraska a fighting chance. Thomas has the ability to be a game changer any day. Thomas feasts on a poor defense, but I think he can be limited in yardage against a strong defense. Nebraska’s defense might be better than that. I don’t see Kansas St. doing what it has earlier in the season. William Powell is a good change of pace back. Nebraska will be up for a challenge, which I think it will handle.

The redshirt freshman, Taylor Martinez, has gotten his name into the Heisman Trophy discussion with his third straight 100-yard rushing performance. Even with his turnovers two weeks ago, I think he should be just fine. Remember, he’s a freshman. He will only continue to get better with every day of effort he puts in. NU fans should be patient and allow this opportunity to grow. He is a player to look out for Thursday night. Everyone just wants to know if can keep it up. I don’t see Kansas St., who survived two close games, challenging much (unless Nebraska comes out like it did vs. South Dakota St.). I just don’t believe that the Wildcats are good as their record proves. Nebraska wins 38-13.
