Raider Week Preview

Posted By Jeff Burke On Oct 8 2010 @ 11:46 am In San Diego Chargers | No Comments

Everyone who is a Charger fan has a deep passion for hatred when it comes to the Raiders.  Even after beating a team time and time again it never gets old.  I never feel sorry for the Raiders, I just want to beat them over and over and over.  Plus the Chargers have some making up to due over the past fifty years.

It looks like the Raiders will be a little tougher this year now that Jamarcus Russel is out and any QB that can complete a forward pass is in.  The Raiders are 1-3 but they did play okay in some of their losses.  They did loose to the Cardinal and we all know what the Chargers did to them last week.  I will say it again the Chargers are going on the road this week and better yet in the division and anything can happen.  The Chargers should role over the Raiders if it was about talent and experience, but if the Chargers loose the turnover battle and have costly penalties it will be a close game.  The Raiders want this game really bad, people have been talking about their improvement all off season and the Raiders want nothing more then to prove it to the defending AFC West Champions, the Chargers.  The Raiders are big and tough in the trenches.  With guys on the O-line like Langston Walker and rookie center Samson Satele (he’s the guy with the pony tail).  The D-line has Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly playing at defensive tackle, after the Raiders moved back to a 4-3.  The big bodies up front will have to hold their ground and win the battle up front.

Enough about the Raiders.  The Chargers can really pound the Raiders on the ground.  In week one Chris Johnson had 142 yards rushing against the Raiders, in week three Wells and Hightower had 115, and in week four Foster had 131 yards and he didn’t play the first quarter.  If the Chargers stick to the run Tolbert and Mathews should put up big numbers and could easily average over five yards a carry.  I’m sure Rivers will have a good game because at this point I expect Rivers to always have a good game.  Look for the Raiders to really try and stop Gates (Good luck).  So I would like to see more of Nanee and Buster Davis with crossing patterns as Gates clears out the middle.  It looks like Darren McFadden will not play for the Raiders, that is one less weapon for them on offense.  The Chargers will be missing Steven Gregory after being suspended earlier in the week.  Not sure when Shawn Merriman might see the field again and talks around Chargers camp concerning Merriman are not good.  Meanwhile Phillips and Applewhite are playing very well and with the LB group getting healthy they are starting to play very well.  When talking about stopping the Raiders offense it starts with stopping the run and forcing Gradkowski to throw and make mistakes.  Also their key weapon on offense is definitely Zach Miller it will be huge for the Chargers to slow him down as in the past Miller and many other TE’s have hurt the Chargers.
