Texas will have to wait another day for a series victory

Things looked like normal in this series.  Texas pitching had silenced the Rays for six innings then the law of averages came out and the Rays bats woke up.  The Texas Rangers had the Tampa Bay Rays in their grasp on Saturday afternoon in Arlington but let things slip away.  The Rays rally started with a lead off walk to Evan Longoria by starter Colby Lewis, who had pitched well up until the top of the sixth inning.  Tampa got its first run in the series since Ben Zobrists game one homer and they got some confidence.

Tampa has been a come from behind team all season long and in game three of the ALDS it proved this again.  The Rays scored five runs after the sixth inning on their way to a 6-3 win and more importantly closed the gap in the best of five series to 2-1.  The Rangers Bullpen, which up to this point had been lights out for the series, looked vulnerable.  The Rays hit all of the Rangers relievers well including hammering All Star Closer Neftali Feliz.  It can probably be summed up best to say that the Rangers were nervous towards the end of the game trying to close out a playoff series, something Texas has never done in its 39 year franchise history.  Some will account it to a bad day and the Rays bats finally waking up.  Either way you look at it the big positive is that the Rangers still have two cracks at ending this series and they way they have played their first three games you would think they could close it out.  A negative look at it that the Rays may have just awoken and can find themselves tied in this series heading home for the deciding game five.  Of note as well is that Texas has never won a home playoff game.

Carl Crawford may have said it best in the post game interview “I feel so much better. It feels like we’re winning the series right now.”  This Rays team may have found its swagger and its confidence after having their backs against the wall.  Now heading into game four on Sunday it will be the Rangers who may have to answer the call and find it in themselves to finally give them and their fans a long overdue playoff series victory.

Looking ahead:

Texas leads best of 5 series 2-1

Game 4 - Sunday October 10, 2010 @ 1pm EST  at Rangers Ballpark

Probables: TAMPA Wade Davis vs TEXAS Tommy Hunter
