Wildcats Suffer First Loss of the Season, Fall to Oregon State 29-27

Well, I hate to say I told you so. But…. I told you so.
Arizona lost to Oregon State on Saturday night 29-27. The Beavers, despite playing more than half of the game without their star receiver James Rodgers, absolutely outplayed the Wildcats. On offense, Ryan Katz had a monster game. On defense, Arizona actually put up a lot of yards, but couldn’t capitalize. And on special teams, Alex Zendejas missed a field goal and an extra point.
It was sloppy for Arizona. However, there were some bright spots. Juron Criner had another monster game, and I’m starting to think he may be THE BEST wide receiver in the Pac-10. He finished with 12 catches, 179 yards, and a touchdown. Nick Foles was extremely good, passing for 440 (!!!) yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Keola Antolin, who usually plays backup to Nic Grigsby, had his best game this season: Eight carries, 70 yards, and a touchdown. He also had four catches, including one for a score.
But I was highly disappointed by the way Arizona’s defense played. They were ranked second in the FBS in total defense coming into the game, and they just flat-out blew it. Ryan Katz continues to show his maturation into a very good quarterback, and Jacquizz kept the Wildcat defense on its toes all game long. The corners for Arizona got beat repeatedly, and the defensive line wasn’t able to get much pressure on Katz the entire game. The offense for Arizona played pretty well, but they still only ended up with just over 100 yards rushing for the entire game, and they need to figure out their running back position; who is it, Antolin or Grigsby? If Grisgby is their No. 1 guy, why did he only get five carries?
Despite the loss, Arizona still has time to finish the season with a bang. They play at Washington State next week, host Washington after that, and then begin a grueling four-game stretch in which they play at UCLA, at Stanford, at home against USC, and then at Oregon.
The Beavers flat-out won this football game. I was very impressed with the composure of Katz, and how hard Quizz Rodgers ran the ball, even if he only ran for 83 yards.
The Wildcats will regroup, and recover. They should be 7-1 going into the game at Stanford, which may decide if the Pac-10 get’s a second BCS Bowl berth if Oregon continues to play the way it is right now.
What was your impression of the game? I want to know, so leave a comment below. I’ll make sure to reply.
