Surprise, Surprise the Chargers went on the road and lost a game to a team that is not very good. The Chargers are so inconsistent between home and road games it is ridiculous. Home field advantage is one thing, what the Chargers are doing this year is just unacceptable. I know the Chargers are better at home, all teams are, but how can you make so many mistakes on the road and play flawless at home. Penalties, fumbles, Safeties, and giving points on special teams is something Chargers fans have come to expect in their road games.
The Chargers showed again how talented and explosive they are. Rivers threw for 431 yards and Malcom Floyd had 213 yards receiving. The defense played well, the Chargers spotted the Raiders 12 points early and with the offenses turnovers the defense was on the field most of the first half. Shaun Phillips is playing out of his mind getting after the QB play after play. His hit that forced a fumble that was reviewed and called back would have been a big time game changer. The defense allowed only 173 yards through the air, maybe it would have been better if Gradkowski stayed in the game as he was 1-7 with 14 yards passing when he left the game with an injury after Phillips’ hit. The pass defense is a big improvement so far this year from last year.
Here are some excuses. It seems like every loss the Chargers have had this year every small break and call does not go their way. In the game yesterday there was numerous booth reviews and the Chargers only won one of them, and it was the least important one. The two fumbles or incomplete passes by each teams QB both looked incomplete to me. Of course the refs saw it differently and called the Raiders incomplete and the Chargers a fumble. Also the Zach Millers touchdown looked as if his elbow landed out of bounds as he came down with it. This was not overturned which I understand because usually the call on the field would stand, but the calls on the field did not stand that went the Chargers way. Also two blocked punts one for a safety and one for a touchdown never happens. The Chargers really need to clean things up if they want to win, good teams do not loose football games this way. The Chargers inconsistent ways have to stop soon as they play at the Texans, at the Colts, and at the Broncos to end the season. If the Chargers want to make the playoffs they obviously will have to win some road games. I expect the Chargers to pull things together over the next few weeks. It was a hard game to watch but the Chargers will learn from this game and only get better!
