I spent many years covering the Anaheim Ducks.  They have some of the most obnoxious, uneducated hockey fans around.  However, their ice girls are all Playboy material.  With that said, I receive great pleasure when watching them lose (the team that is), especially at the hands of the St. Louis Blues.

Let’s look at some compelling notes from this game:

The Blues outshot the Ducks 53-14.  Welcome to St. Louis Jonas Hiller.  That 39 shot differential is a record for the Blues.  But they also broke another franchise record in this game.  The Blues scored goals six seconds apart, breaking their 42-year old record by one second.  Way to go David Backes and former Duck Andy McDonald.

Alex Steen outshot the Ducks 9-8 after two periods of play.  That’s right.  By the way, how good has Steen been dating back to last season.  Let’s not forget this nifty trade by former GM Larry Pleau when he dealt Lee Stempniak.  Steen led all Blues forwards in this game with 9 shots on goal and 25:15 total time on the ice.

As I wrote in a previous column which I’m sure my loyal, faithful readers clearly remember, the Blues need to improve in the faceoff circle.  So far, so good.  In particular, Jay McClement.  He won 11 out of 19 draws today.  Puck possession is the name of the game and winning faceoffs gives you that immediate edge.

Now let’s look at one area the Blues should focus on.  The power play.  This will certainly improve over time and you can bet your Blues sweaters Davis Payne will be wearing out his dry ink markers trying to solve the issue.  The team went 1-11 today and are just 2-21 on the season.  That’s bad.  As in Anaheim Ducks bad.  Keep it simple and get the shots through to the net.  Good thing I’m not a coach, eh?

Lastly, I really want to see Patrik Berglund ramp it up.  He had only one shot on goal today and won just two of six faceoffs.  The Swede needs to increase his intensity if he wants his ice time to gain minutes.  He definitely has the ability, now it’s time for him to show confidence and passion.  You just can’t use Andy Murray as an excuse anymore.

Off to Nashville for the pesky Predators in a Thursday night Central Division battle.  For those of you wondering, very impressive ice girls in Nashville as well.  Maybe that’s a future column?  Ranking the teams with the hottest ice girls.  I’ll ask the boss about that one.  But for now, let’s see if the successful home play carries over to the road.
