Temple Fans- Let Me Introduce You to Chris Coyer

With about eight minutes to play, the Owls got down 31-17 after a Chad Spann 6-yard touchdown. You knew at that very moment that Temple was done. No way was Chester Stewart going to lead us back. Nevertheless, it was a well played game and I wouldn’t be surprised if these two meet again in Detroit for the MAC Championship.
Let’s get back to Stewart. The Temple offense is predicated on the run. Stewart’s role within the offense is to get the ball down the field. He has a very strong arm, and he fills his role nicely. When Stewart gets called upon on 3rd down obvious passing downs, he’s hit or miss. His accuracy isn’t always there. Lastly, in two minute situations he’s just not equipped to lead his team down the field. Stewart is not there yet as a quarterback, although he’s already a junior.
This brings me to my next point. One of the freshman redshirts currently sitting out this season is quarterback Chris Coyer. Coyer is 6’3 215 pounds. He played his high school ball at Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia.
Coyer played in a spread offense at Oakton. In his senior season, Coyer threw for 17 touchdowns, while rushing for an additional 15. He had just three interceptions. Coyer had 1,401 rushing yards compared to 1,287 yards passing. In an offense already run oriented, Coyer would add a new wrinkle. He’s a quarterback who can run the football as well as he can throw it. Just to throw it in here, Chris Coyer’s Great-Great Uncle Harry Cochran was the Dean of Temple’s Business School in the 1940’s.
I obviously want to focus on this year first, but I’m curious to see what the coaching staff will do next year with the duo of Stewart and Coyer. Will they split series/snaps, or will Coach Golden choose one over the other.
