Quick Cincinnati/Tampa Bay Recap

Last season, the Bengals won the AFC North Title because of their ball control offense and stingy defense. Cedric Benson became the focal point of the offense, running behind a solid run-blocking offensive line.
This year, Cincinnati is throwing the ball more, and now they’re 2-3 after a tough 24-21 loss.
Carson Palmer had 29.1 pass attempts per game last season. This year, that number has jumped to 38.8. Cedric Benson carried the ball 31.6 times per game last year. He’s averaging 27.8 carries per game this year. I can understand changing the philosophy if the running game isn’t working, but Benson has been fine. It’s been Palmer who’s been turning the ball over. He had three interceptions in Sunday’s loss to Tampa Bay.
Benson ran all over Tampa Bay’s defense, yet Cincinnati kept airing it out. Yes, Benson did carry it 23 times (a lot these days). He had 144 yards, averaging 6.3 yards a carry. Palmer threw it 36 times. Everytime the Bengals ran the ball, they shredded the Tampa Bay defense.
How about Tampa Bay, 3-1 wow! Josh Freeman may be the most underrated young quarterback in the league. His poise under pressure was fantastic as he led Tampa Bay to two seperate scoring drives in the final two minutes of the ball game.
Cincinnati has a much needed bye week. The team needs to get their act together.
