Arizona plays Washington State this weekend in Pullman, trying to rebound from a 29-27 loss to Oregon State last Saturday. UA is now 4-1, 1-1 in the Pac-10, and faces a Washington State team that lost to Oregon last Saturday 43-23.
Although one may think that a 43-23 game is a blowout, Wazzu actually played darn well against the now number two ranked team in the country. Quarterback Jeff Tuel looked very effective against the Ducks for much of the first half, and the run game for the Cougars looked pretty good against UO. However, the fact still remains that Washington State’s defense is really, really, REALLY bad. They allowed Darron Thomas, the Ducks’ quarterback, and then backup QB Nate Costa to run and throw all over them. Nick Foles should have a field day.
Speaking of Nick Foles, he had a remarkable day against Oregon State last week: 35-46, 440 yards, two touchdowns. Wow. He was efficient, accurate, and almost led the comeback late in the game against the Beavs. Against a shaky Cougar defense, he should be golden.
Another key is the running game for the Wildcats. Washington State, who has one of the worst run defenses in the entire country, did a fair job in bottling up LaMichael James last week until it came to late in the third quarter. Arizona must be willing to run with Nic Grigsby, Keola Antolin, and Greg Nwoko to have a balanced attack. If the running game is working, then the passing game will most likely work as well.
I predict that Arizona will win this game 38-17. Don’t be surprised if Wazzu puts up some points; they have a good enough offense to play with anyone in the Pac-10. But Arizona has too good of an offense and a defense to be scared of the Cougars, and they will improve to 5-1 on the season.
