No. 5 Nebraska prepares to host Texas

The 5-0 Cornhuskers come back to Memorial Stadium in the Big 12 home opener. Nebraska has captured the eye of the country with Taylor Martinez leading the charge. Even though Martinez has been getting much of the credit, his offensive teammates have held up their end of the bargain. His receivers have been instrumental in the blocking scheme especially on the runs where the plays break down. Most of the long runs have come as designed. Any coach will love that. The draw play has worked for the majority of the season. I wonder if Texas can (finally) stop it. Besides Martinez, the running backs have made the most of their touches. Rex Burkhead and Roy Hulu Jr. have shown they are also capable of carrying the load. Both backs have at least 350 yards and three touchdowns on the season. This is remarkable considering how much they share the ball.

Texas was ranked in the top five in the preseason, and it was a preseason Big 12 favorite. Texas has taken a steep decent down the rankings and out of it. The Longhorns lost to unranked UCLA and Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. Texas is coming off a bye week where a lot of issues were addressed. It seems this team has the talent to compete with almost any team, but it is just not performing when it counts. This has got to make the coach second guess about his team. A big reason for this mess is turnovers. Texas has turned the ball over 12 times while just forcing seven turnovers.

I believe Nebraska won’t drop the ball on this one. Being one of the best pass defenses in the country, it will continue to force turnovers at a good rate. I don’t see much from Garrett Gilbert or the Longhorn offense that will stop the Cornhuskers. I like Nebraska to go 6-0 and to start in the top five in the BCS Standings. Nebraska wins 34-17.
