Iowa at Michigan: A Preview

This is it. This is the time that Michigan needs to step up and win a big game at home against a national power. The wins against Notre Dame and UConn were nice and got everyone excited, but this game is HUGE. Iowa, winners of a BCS game last year, come into Ann Arbor for a nationally televised game with Big Ten title implications. Even though Michigan stumbled a week ago against Michigan State, they still have their destiny in their hands…err Denard Robinson’s hands. If Michigan can somehow beat the Hawkeyes, they are still in the hunt for the Big Ten title.

A win against the Hawkeyes will come down to whether UM gets the Denard Robinson of the first 5 games or the Denard Robinson of last week. Last week, simply put, Robinson and the Wolverine offense were outmatched by the Spartan defense. Things are not going to get any easier with the star studded Iowa defense coming into town. With up to six All-Big Ten defenders suiting up for Iowa, led by all world defensive lineman Adrian Clayborn, the Hawkeyes are giving up only 10.2 points per game and haven’t surrendered a rushing touchdown this season. Denard Robinson is going to have to be at his best in order to get enough points on the board to get a win. He will have to beat the Hawkeyes with his legs and his arm because this defense will not allow UM to win playing one dimensional football.

Even with a great performance by Robinson, the Michigan defense might not be good enough to get the win. They have not been good this year. That’s probably a vast understatement, but I have beaten on them since the preseason. Bottom line is that this defense will have to play great to get the win Saturday. Led by experienced quarterback Ricky Stanzi and outstanding running back Adam Robinson, this Iowa team can score points and control the clock. Look for them to play some ball control offense in order to keep Robinson off of the field. The problem is that the UM defense is so bad that ball control might mean a 5 play 80 yard drive.

This is a game that can either propel the Wolverines back into the national rankings or send them into another second half nosedive. Even though last week’s game was against a bitter rival and a game with “The Rival” looms later on, this might be the biggest game for UM since Rich Rodriguez arrived on campus. We’ll have to see what happens…..

But take Iowa -3.5. This is a funny line, but I think you have to take the better team in this one. I think Michigan will have a tough time stopping the Hawkeyes and Michigan doesn’t stop anyone. Iowa 38-UM 24.

As for other games of interest. And by interest I mean games that I will be betting on:

Texas A&M -3 vs. Missouri: I’ll take the Aggies at home after two tough losses against really good teams. The 12th man won’t allow them to lose at home in this one.

Oklahoma St. +3.5 @ Texas Tech: The Cowboys finally end the drought of winning in Lubbock.

Ohio St. -4 @ Wisconsin: 4 points?? Bucks win this one by double digits and cruise. Play this one big!!
