A Heaping Helping Of Suck

That may have been the most piss poor performance I have seen in years by the Calgary Flames during their 3-0 loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Calgary Flames generated almost zero quality scoring chances, were outworked by the Panthers all over the ice, and for the most part seemed disinterested in winning one on one battles.

The whole team stunk last night though Miikka Kiprusoff did not play poorly, he just didn’t have any help. But I am going to focus on two players today. Jarome Iginla and Jay Bouwmeester.

Jarome is supposed to be the leader of this team and for most of the game he was invisible, and played with absolutely no edge whatsoever. The burden of leadership falls on his shoulders and last night he absolutely failed in that role. I don’t know what else you can say about it.

Jay Bouwmeester took another bone head penalty for cross checking which is getting to be a common occurrence. He has tried to step up his physical play but is failing when it comes to defense 101. The first thing any defenseman is taught when they play is that you tie up the stick of the man in front. Not only did Jay fail to do that on the Panthers first goal, he failed to even be facing the right direction to make any play on Radek Dvorak.

This is what happened to the Flames last year. They would play one game very well and looked like the team they should be, then they would lay a stinker the next game. This has to stop now.

I am going to propose something here that will never happen but to me it makes sense. Move Jay Bouwmeester to the wing! He is a great skater and good passer, he also can release the puck quickly with his shot. The Flames need production up front and Jay could be the best solution available to the team. Bouwmeester has been a liability in his own zone as a defender so take him out of there and throw Cory Sarich into the mix on the blue line.

Speaking of Sarich was anyone else as shocked as I was to see Steve Staios dressed ahead of Sarich? Steve came out and laid a wonderful -3 on the night and showed why he belongs in the press box or Abbotsford playing for the Heat.

Have a good one! And try not to throw anything through your TV watching this crap!
