Bombers Win Bullpen Battle

No one saw that coming. CC Sabathia gave up five early runs and the Yankees trailed for most of the game, but true to form, the Bombers rallied as the Texas bullpen imploded in the eighth.

Down 5-1, following a Robinson Cano solo homer in the seventh, Brett Gardner started off with an infield single the next inning. From then on, Ron Washington wore a path to the mound changing pitchers. C.J. Wilson’s brilliant start was squandered and the Yankees chipped away until they led 6-5.

Dustin Moseley got the win after taking over for Joba Chamberlain, who spelled Sabathia. Kerry Wood was solid in the setup role and Mariano Rivera earned his 42nd post-season save. Chalk up Game 1 for the Yankees.

I can’t help thinking yet again that New York just sits in wait for an opportunity to pounce. Lately it’s been against poor relief pitching. The Rangers faithful were certainly fooled into thinking that Game 1 was theirs, but the Yankees didn’t panic. That was their recipe for success on Friday. Game 2 is just a few hours away, so we’ll see what they cook up Saturday.
