According to sources at ESPN, the San Jose Sharks have re-signed Joe Thornton to a 3-year $21 million extension. Thornton, 31, is slated to earn $7.2 million this season and was set to become an unrestricted free-agent this summer and has also publicly expressed his interest in staying with the Sharks in recent interviews especially after being named team captain. Jumbo, has 2 goals in his first two games this season.
The deal will keep Thornton a Shark through the 2013-2014 season, however, when that season concludes, Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau, Dan Boyle and Joe Pavelski will all become unrestricted free-agents. The clock is ticking in San Jose.
The Sharks are set to take on the Atlanta Thrashers tonight in their regular season home opener after opening up the year in Stockholm, Sweden.
