2010 NLCS Game One Thoughts…

GAME 1

2010 NLCS Preview- Philadelphia vs San Francisco [1]

The Phillies are in a postseason situation they’re not used to.  This is the first time that the Phils have lost a Game 1 of a best of 7 series; atleast in this current era of Phillies baseball.  From 2007-2010, they had a 4-0 record in Game One’s of the NLCS and World Series respectively.

The game tonight really couldv’e went either way, but it was Cody Ross who played the role of Phillie killer.  He hit two homeruns in his first two at-bats.  Roy Halladay threw two sinkers in the exact same spot, middle in, and Ross went yard on both occassions.

We saw similar pitching performances from Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay.  Both pitched ok, although they dealt with a tight strike zone all night.  Both aces went seven innings.  Halladay gave up four earned on eight hits.  He struck out seven.  Lincecum gave up three earned on six hits, walking three.  He struck out eight.

There were two key pitches in this game that proved costly for Philadelphia.  Pat Burrell was down 0-2 in the count in the top of the sixth with San Francisco holding a 2-1 lead.  Halladay threw a fastball down a bit in the zone, called a ball.  On the next pitch, Burrell poked one out to left.  Phillies LF Raul Ibanez jumped a bit too soon, misjudging the line drive.  He couldn’t come down with the catch as Buster Posey motored home from first base to make it 3-1 Giants.

Next, Juan Uribe hit a seeing eye single up the middle to make it 4-1.

Jayson Werth answered with a two run shot in the bottom of the inning, but that was just about it from the Philly bats for the rest of the night.

The Giants bullpen pitched magnificently.  The lefyt Javier Lopez took care of Utley and Howard in the eighth.  Brian Wilson then came on for a four out save.

The character of this Philadelphia ball club has to come out if they want to win this series.  I’m not sure whether or not to be concerned about their bats.  Guys like Utley and Howard have yet to really get it going, and Jimmy Rollins is struggling.  Werth and Ruiz are kind of carrying the line-up a bit right now.  Utley and Howard need to start centering the ball a bit better.

I’m not going to proclaim Game 2 being a must win for the Phillies, but it’s damn sure an important game.  Two seasons ago I’d say this Game 2 would be a must win.  They’ve shown over the last couple of postseasons that they’re more than capable winning on the road.  I’m curious to see how the Phillies come out of the gates in Game 2.

All in all, this feels like it’s going to be a fantastic series.  Enjoy.
