Arizona Holds Off Washington State 24-7

Arizona beat Washington State 24-7 on Saturday, but it wasn’t without penalty. Nick Foles left in the first half with an injury to his knee, and forced backup quarterback Matt Scott to come in. He didn’t do too badly of a job, though. Scott completed 14 of 20 passes for 139 yards and an interception, but kept the game in check for the most part.

Foles will be out at least two weeks with a sprained knee.

When Foles went down, the Wildcats turned to the run game to lead them to a victory. Keola Antolin continued to impress, rushing for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Nic Grigsby finished with 66 yards on the ground and a touchdown as well.

I wanted to quickly say that I am very impressed with how Antolin has played the past couple of games. It looks like he’s giving Grigsby a run for his money with the starting running back role. But if both of these guys put up similar numbers in future games, it will give Arizona a more balanced attack, and not strictly one-dimensional.

But what impressed most in this game? It was the defense. This was the defense that many people expected to see the last week against Oregon State, but the Beavs had no part in that. In this game, Arizona held Washington State to just under 300 yards of total offense, limited the Cougs to only 40 yards rushing, and forced four turnovers. Not a bad day at the office, if you ask me.

Overall, I thought this was a game that potentially could get away from the Wildcats if they let the Foles injury get inside their heads. But they focused, played well enough on offense to win, and played great on defense to not even get Washington State a chance.

Next week, Arizona plays host to Washington. The Huskies got a big boost this weekend with a double overtime win against Oregon State, so if Arizona looks past Washington in any way, don’t be surprised if the Dawgs pull the upset.

I’ll have the official preview for the Arizona-Washington game up on Thursday, so make sure you stay tuned!
