Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, the Chargers went out and played a very uninspired game against the Rams. The Rams played like they were in the super bowl and the Chargers looked like they were in their first pre-season game trying to get the rust off and learn the offense. It was not a must win game for the Chargers by any means but you would think they would have came out a little more prepared to avoid loosing to the Rams and falling to 2-4 on the season. One huge problem for the bolts on Sunday was the protection, not just the seven sacks but time after time Rivers did not have enough time to throw the ball down field. Then when he did have the time the Rams must have been playing great coverage because Rivers didn’t throw the ball. Going into the game I was wondering about Chris Long and how his career was going as I have not heard much about him since he was the number two overall pick three years back. Well he was waiting to play the Chargers to have his career day. Going into Sunday Long had ten career sacks and he had two on Rivers with about a half dozen hurries. The Chargers passing game really fell off this week, nothing seemed to be working. Then Gates and Floyd left with injuries and the Chargers really ran out of play makers on the field. Patrick Crayton looked good and made some big plays, but if the Chargers are looking to Crayton to supply the big plays in the offense we are really in trouble moving forward. The running game did look good when the Chargers were able to run before the game got out of hand. Mathews averaged 5.3 yards per carry, every run getting 4,5, or 6 yards. He is now averaging 5.1 yards per carry on the season which is a very impressive stat. L.T. averaged just 3.3 yards last year and it was the same line and same offense. The Chargers big problem this year is they have not put together a complete game on the road. One aspect of the team either Special teams or Defense or the offense has failed miserably in every road game. It is hard to watch right now, but I am still confident the Chargers will get better every week and be in the mix to win the division.
Side note- The Refs have been pretty bad this year. I have seen some horrible calls. With Pass interference being called and not being called especially. Not just with the Chargers games. Did you see the P.I . called on Flowers against Andre Johnson in the K.C. game? WOW. Even though that call did help the bolts it was awful.
