Joe Nieuwendyk announced that former teammate and longtime NHLer Gary Roberts has been hired on as the Stars Player Development Consultant. Roberts retired as a player after the 2008-09 season where he played 30 games with the Tamp Bay Lightning.

Roberts and Nieuwendyk were teammates in Florida, Toronto, and in Calgary where they began their careers and won a Cup together with the Flames in 1989. Roberts also had stints in Carolina and Pittsburgh. He played 1,224 games over his career, scoring 438 goals and 910 points. His best season coming in 1991-92 with the Flames where he had 53 goals and 90 points ( both career highs ) in 76 games.

The hiring means that Roberts, 44, will be working with the Stars young players at all levels and will team up with the club’s strength and conditioning teams aswell as coaches and trainers.
