After the game tonight Derek MacKenzie would easily have my vote for mayor. He demonstrated that it doesn’t matter how much ice time you get but it’s what you do with your minutes that counts. MacKenzie opened the scoring three minutes into the second period with an outstanding effort. He blocked a shot on one end of the ice and then proceeded to head straight to the blue paint on the other end. He tucked the puck past the Duck’s goaltender Jonas Hiller as he crashed into the net and then the boards. This gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead and they went on to win their third game of the season 3-1. Every time MacKenzie was on the ice he was creating plays and making things happen. He blocked shots. killed penalties, threw body checks, and contributed with his goal. It was an inspirational performance by MacKenzie.
Steve Mason continues to have a good start to the season as he saved 31 of 32 shots. He is looking confident in nets and is making himself look big and intimidating. The Blue Jackets will need Mason to continue to play strong in order to make the playoffs.
Rick Nash scored his second and third goals of the season. He has yet to beat a goalie with a clean shot as he scored his second goal of the season when the puck was deflected in off of a Duck’s defenseman. His third goal of the season was shot into an empty net. Nash needs to get a few clean goals in order to build his confidence and to eventually challenge for the Rocket Richard Trophy.
It would have been hard to predict that Marc Methot would lead the Blue Jackets in ice time during the game tonight. However, after watching the game it is definitely believable. He played solid tonight and demonstrated excellent patience as he broke up a 2-1 situation when it was only a one goal game.
Ethan Moreau left the game early as he blocked a shot off of his arms. Hopefully it won’t take long for him to heal and be back in the line-up. He has been an excellent role model for the younger players on the Blue Jackets.
It doesn’t surprise me that Scott Arniel is running a team that believes in hard work and determination. It really seems like the Blue Jackets are playing a hard-nosed style and are working well as a team. You can already see Arniel’s stamp on this team and the positive effect he is having on the youth.
The Blue Jackets next game is Friday night against the Calgary Flames.
