Can Arizona Win Without Nick Foles?

Without starting quarterback Nick Foles, Arizona plays host to Washington on Saturday at 2:45 PT.

How will the Wildcats adjust to life without Foles, and with new start Matt Scott? Scott started the first three games of last year, before stepping aside to Foles. Scott knows the offense, but with him at the helm, the offense may turn from pass-oriented to a run-first mentality. Scott is known much more for his feet rather than his arm.

This game will also include two of the best wide receivers in the Pac-10, and maybe even the country. Jermaine Kearse of Washington and Juron Criner for Arizona both need to have big games in order for their teams to win. Look for Scott to go to Criner early and often as his most reliable target.

It seems like the coaching staff for Arizona has found a happy medium with running backs Nic Grigsby and Keola Antolin. They should have success against a defense that is ranked near the bottom in almost all statistical categories.

As for the Arizona defense, they will have their hands full trying to defend Jake Locker of Washington. The last time the Wildcats faced off against a strong-armed quarterback, Ryan Katz of Oregon State ripped the Arizona secondary apart, passing for nearly 400 yards. The defense must be ready for Locker to make plays both in the air, as well as on the ground.

Personally, I think the Arizona offense can have a lot of success against a pretty bad Washington defense. But I like the way Jake Locker has been playing lately for the Huskies. His numbers aren’t great; but they aren’t terrible, either. His poor game against Nebraska has a lot to do with it, especially his completion percentage. I don’t know if Arizona can contain him for the entire game.

The last time I picked an upset, I was correct. So, I’m going for it again. I think Washington will win this game, 28-24. The Huskies will give up some points, but Locker and the offense of Washington will just be able to squeak by an Arizona offense without their biggest weapon, Nick Foles. Don’t forget about Chris Polk, the running back for the Huskies, either. He is capable of making big plays.
