Notre Dame Links – Thursday

A comment appeared on one of my past posts citing how different this Notre Dame team has looked on Brian Kelly, compared to Charlie Weis. Boy, what a difference a few weeks makes. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that readers were talking about how similar this Notre Dame team looked to the Charlie Weis years?
Opinions in College Football, more then any other sport, change on a dime. I think this is a valid change. We have definitely seen a difference in the way teams approach games under the two coaches. This hasn’t been seen in the bigger games, however, as much as it has against weaker opponents. Think about the amount of “easy victories” Charlie Weis had. I bet you could find more bad upset losses. Even the wins against inferior opponents were often too close for comfort. Remember the Navy game two seasons ago? How about last season against an awful Purdue team?
Kelly’s Irish have been taking care of business. Boston College stinks and Notre Dame exploited that. Same thing with Western Michigan. Pittsburgh was a team the Irish were, at least, equal to and they were able to win a very winnable game at home.
Thats the difference between the two. Kelly’s team wins the winable. Weis’ teams did not. Winning the winable is the first step to pulling an upset or “statement win.” But don’t get crazy yet, Kelly is 0 -3 in “statement games.” Sorry, Pittsburgh at home doesn’t count.
Now, the links
This has nothing to do with anything but if you haven’t read Next Man Up By John Feinstein, you are missing out. It’s a behind the scenes account of the 2005 Baltimore Ravens. It is excellent.
This date in Irish History – 1933
Beleaguered head coach Hunk Anderson’s Irish fall to rival Carnegie Tech 7-0, in an upset. The loss was the first of four in a row, and Notre Dame ended the season a dismal 3-5-1. This would be Anderson’s last season as coach, as former Four Horsemen Elmer Layden would take over in 1934
Enjoy Thursday. Two Days Until Navy.
