Flames Offense Fizzles Out

Looks like the boys wearing the flaming C on their chests have a problem. They can’t score! On a night where the team had a very good first period and a 2-1 lead at the intermission thanks to a pair of goals from Mikael Backlund, they could just not find a way to sustain any offensive pressure and put the game further out of reach and in classic Detroit Red Wings fashion they stuck to their game and banged away and ended up getting rewarded with a 4-2 win.

Now this is not to say the Flames played poorly. Because as a whole they really didn’t. The problem was and is that they just can’t finish their chances. While everyone wants to throw Jokinen under the bus, the captain once again just couldn’t get his game going and lead this team to victory in a game the Flames really could have won.

Looking individually obviously Backlund had a great game tonight on both ends of the ice and was rewarded with a couple goals. Craig Conroy also had a solid night. Connie did a fine job on the PK and also drew a couple penalties with a little extra hustle. (Jarome please take note of that) I also thought Matt Stajan had a very good game. Tonight was the first night where I was watching him play and create and thought to myself ‘He actually looks like a top line center’ hopefully Matt can keep his play up and have some help with linemates finishing the chances he has been creating.

Jay Bouwmeester once again had a better night in his own end. I almost spit out my chips when he actually finished a check in the first period. Mark Giordano continues to be a monster with a few more blocked shots and really nasty play in his own end making the lives of the Wings miserable. Final props go to Cory Sarich who is looking like the guy Calgary wanted to see a couple years ago. Lets hope Cory keeps hammering people through the walls! He also drew an assist on the first goal with a nice hustle play keeping the puck deep.

Steve Staios was not good again. His foot speed is no longer at an NHL level. You can’t question his heart but he took another bad penalty which led to the tying goal, and is now showing he is not fast enough for this league.

The top 6 for the Flames played alright all night and did generate some chances but at some point you have to score a damn goal! Through six games the Flames have scored a WHOPPING TEN GOALS! Miikka is going to start talking to himself even more if the Flames don’t provide him with some more offense. (Jason Spezza. Just Saying)

Miikka was average tonight and looks like he could use a couple days off and I suspect he will get a game off tomorrow night in Columbus when the Flames take on the Blue Jackets.

3-3-0 won’t get you into the playoffs. This team had better find a way to start scoring soon or this could get messy.

Have a good one!
