Huskies Run Over CMU

The first half wasn’t too bad, besides the three turnovers. CMU fought hard and was playing ok, keeping the game close down only 9-7 at halftime. Sadly for the CMU football team their was a second half. NIU outscored the guest Chippewa’s 24-0 in the second half to win easily 33-7. CMU is now 2-6 on the year, and 1-4 in conference play. To understand how bad that is, the last four years CMU has lost 3 conference games total. But when things are good, they are good, you find ways to win, and when they are going bad, they just keep getting worse and you find new ways to lose. On Saturday NIU was lead by RB Chad Spann who had 101 yards and 3 touchdowns. Cameron Bell also had 82 yards on 12 carries, and QB Chandler Harnish also rushed the ball 11 times for 69 yards, as well as went 12-19 for 138 yards.
Besides the defense getting ran all over the offense didn’t do much better, in fact they did worse. In all the Chippewa’s threw 4 interceptions and had one fumble. No team can turn the ball over five time and win on the road, but especially a young team trying to learn a new system has to give themselves as many chances as they can. Our offense is just terrible right now, that is all there is to it. The defense actually played well in the first half, giving up some yards, but always holding NIU to field goals. When that happens the offense has to score more then once.
Coach Enos has to firgure out something, and do it quick, because the offense needs to put some points of the board. That hasn’t been a problem for CMU for the last 4 years, but it has been a very big problem this year. The only positive today was Cody Wilson who caught 11 passes for 115 yards, but he did have a fumble early in the game that ended a drive.
CMU returns home to play Bowling Green next week in a game that CMU has to win. They have lost two home games in a row, after loosing two home games total the last three years, and their 5 game loosing streak needs to end. This team needs to do something to keep the fans they got over the last four years of success. True fans will not go away, but you can’t give up all the new fans you earned over 4 straight bowl games and 3 conference titles in four years. They will not be either of those things this year, but the CMU football team still has four games left, two of them at home, and one of those is against arch rival Western Michigan, so CMU can not feel sorry for themselves and think about what use to be, they need to get back to work and try to make something of this season. Give the fans, and the players, something positive to look forward to for the 2011 season, and beyond.
