Martinez, Nebraska wins shootout in Stillwater

Taylor Martinez went from getting benched last week to a passing sensation this week. Martinez threw for five touchdowns as Nebraska beat former unbeaten Oklahoma State. Martinez ended the day with 323 yards in the air and 112 on the ground. There was a nice mix of both the short passing game and airing it out. This is what Nebraska is getting good at: using their receiver’s talents to their advantage. Brandon Kinnie caught his first three touchdowns of his career. Kinnie really seemed to use his athleticism well on his first touchdown, breaking an initial tackle and then using his speed. I can’t give enough kudos to senior Niles Paul. Even though with only one receiving touchdown this year, Paul continues to make big plays to set up the Cornhuskers offense. He is showing his resiliency after dropping two crucial balls last week.

Paul also contributed on special teams. With his breakaway speed, Paul took a 100-yard kick back to the house. This is what I like to see him really focus on. He only needs about two key blocks, and the rest he can take care of. Unlike last week, there was only one turnover today. And unlike last week, Nebraska won today. It’s very surprising how that works. I am still not convinced this team could consistently play clean on offense.

Our defense struggled to keep the Cowboys out of the end zone. I don’t think fans can get on this defense just yet. Are they still one of the best in the country? I’m not ready to just take them down yet. When a team’s playing the third best team in the country in terms of offense, it will give up points. Oklahoma State is probably the only team this year to prove that it was quicker the Nebraska. From getting beat on a flea flicker to other plays, Oklahoma State really executed its game plan well. Kendall Hunter rushed for over 200 yards and racked up two touchdowns. This defense faces another tough test next week when it plays Mizzou.
