Okay, I’ll be honest. I started writing this post on Thursday night. There was no way that Wazzu was going to win this game, and don’t let the final score deceive you. This game was over by halftime and then sealed with a 17 yard touchdown pass by Andrew Luck to Doug Baldwin to give the Cardinal a 31-7 lead.
Wazzu scored 14 points in the last 3:46 to make the outcome appear closer than reality. Luck was efficient but not brilliant. The offense performed well today but left plenty of points on the field. The biggest take away from this game is that Stanford’s defense is a concern.
To give up almost 400 yards in offense to the one of the worst offenses in division I football has to be addressed by Jim Harbaugh.
In its previous two games Stanford’s defense gave up 626 yards to Oregon and 498 to USC. This will not get it done over the long haul and Stanford will end up losing a game it should win due to its poor defensive play.
On the positive side, the Cardinal are still control their own fate by holding onto 2nd place in the PAC-10. For them to win the PAC-10 crown and play in Pasadena on New Year’s Day, requires them to win out and have Oregon lose two conference games. Not likely.
Next week Stanford heads up to Seattle to face UDUB.
