Bombers Bummed

The Yankees saw their dreams of a repeat World Championship go down the tubes on Friday thanks to poor pitching and a sputtering offense, and some would add, micromanagement by Joe Girardi. Texas playing like a team on fire didn’t help, either.

Today the Bombers announced that pitching coach Dave Eiland was let go. The claim was that it had nothing to do with the post-season performance, and speculations hinted that it was related to his secretive leave of absence this season while A.J. Burnett self-destructed. Regardless, if they had made it to the World Series, I don’t think his exit would have been as hasty (if it would have happened at all).

Reports say that Girardi will re-sign with the team but that GM Brian Cashman will read him the riot act (deservedly so) about his blasted binder and being too uptight. Listen, Joe, if the Yankees are telling you you’re too anal retentive about your job, you truly are! I for one think he over-managed. I’m not a big fan the intentional walk, and certainly not multiples of them.

Jeter should be back, but after a less than dazzling post-season, people are already starting to compare him to Ripken when Cal entered the twilight of his career. Mo is coming back too, and if I had to guess Andy might make another go of it.

I think it’s too soon to speculate about signings and trades. The Yankees still need to lick their wounds and evaluate what went wrong. Tex getting injured certainly didn’t help but the team did not play like the defending champions. They played like a wild card team that barely made the playoffs.

Here’s the update on my picks – I still have one horse in the race!

ALCS
Wrong team, right number of games. I did say that whoever comes out of the AL would win it all. I’m almost hoping I’m wrong!

NLCS
Nailed it! Giants beat the Phillies in 6

WORLD SERIES
Previously: AL Team (Yankees  now Rangers) beat the Giants in 6

REVISED: I think the Giants can take the Rangers in 7
