Calgary Beats Up On San Jose

Everyone was wondering when the Flames beat the Blue Jackets 6-2 on Friday if it was a blip or had the Flames finally figured out how to generate some offense. Last night against the San Jose Sharks the Flames took another step towards convincing people that they have indeed found a system that generates some offense in beating the Sharks 4-0.
The score was flattering to the Sharks, as it could have easily been 8-0. The most encouraging thing that came out of the game for Calgary Flames fans was the fact that the big guns led the way in scoring again. Rene Bourque scored twice to give him five goals in the last two games and the NHL’s 1st star of the week! Jarome Iginla also lit the lamp, and Craig Conroy also tucked in a goal giving Stefan Meyer his first NHL point as he slid a beautiful pass to Conroy, which also chased Antti Niemi from the Sharks net midway through the first period.
Antero Niittymaki relieved Niemi and immediately gave up Bourque’s second of the game. He was also quite fortunate that the Flames Curtis Glencross hit the post a couple times and missed a wide open net or the score could have gotten silly. Curtis is one of those guys you love to watch with his speed and ability to generate chances, but drive you a little nutty with his lack of finish from time to time.
Miikka Kiprusoff turned away all 27 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, and made everyone laugh with a bit of a fist pump as the buzzer went to end the game. Perhaps Miikka was taking a bit of a shot at his battery mate Henrik Karlsson who was quite excited after his first NHL win on Friday. Other than a couple good stops off of Dany Heatley, Kiprusoff had a fairly easy night.
The Calgary Flames are beginning to play very well at both ends of the ice with excellent puck support, and a seemingly increased desire to win battles for loose pucks. If this is the way the Flames play the rest of the year then Calgary will be a force to reckon with in the West. Lets see if they can keep it up Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers who visit the Saddledome at 7pm MST.
Have a good one!
