4-2 1st place AFC West. How long has it been since the Chiefs were in first place going into week 8 of the NFL season?..A while. However, this isn’t your everyday Chiefs. On Sunday the Chiefs had a chance to let it slip away, but instead they chose to dig deep within themselves, rally around each other, and get it done.
What at first seemed to be a heroic day for third string Todd Bouman, turned out to be another victory for the Chiefs. Matt Cassel once again was given free reign to let it rip. Dwayne Bowe was the recipient of two touchdown passes, one which came on a 53 yard bomb to the house. Bowe has shown he can be a threat, but this consistency must continue for weeks to come if the Chiefs want continued success. In my opinion I would get on the waiver wire and pick up Bowe, he is catching a lot of heat and should continue to be a big target with his confidence already sky high.
The Chief defense was Chief on Sunday. Derrick Johnson broke the game open with his pick six on Bouman putting the Chiefs up for good. Rookie safety Eric berry recorded his first interception of his career, also forcing a fumble on Mike Thomas. The Chief s defense limited Maurice Jones-Drew to 47 yards on the ground. As I said if they can limit Drew, they will win, and they did.
The true story of the entire day was the ground game. 246 yards on the ground led by Thomas Jones who looked in old form with the Jets ripping off 125 yards and a score. The Chief line deserves most of the credit creating lanes big enough to drive trucks through. The Chiefs consistency on the ground is what has them in 1st place of their division and making them one of the biggest surprise stories of the NFL.
The Chiefs next play host to the Buffalo Bills on Halloween. Could be a scary weekend. Check back later in the week for a look into the Chiefs-Bills match up.
